Device to generate emulsions, foamed emulsions or foams with a low polydispersity

The dispersion cell “LDC-1” from Micropore Technologie [1] is a supplement to our microfluidic devices and is used to generate emulsions, foamed emulsions or foams with a low polydispersity (PDI ~ 10%  to ~ 15%)  in a short period of time. The device consists of an injection chamber for the dispersed phase, which contains the membrane, a glass cylinder for the continuous phase and a stainless steel stirrer within the glass cylinder (Fig. 1). By using appropriate membranes, either water-in-oil or oil-in-water emulsions can be generated as well as foams. The dispersed phase is injected into the injection chamber and pressed through the membrane. After passing the membrane, shear forces, resulting from the stirrer, break the dispersed phase into droplets or bubbles. By using membranes with different pore diameters (10 µm, 20 µm, 100 µm), different droplet or bubble sizes can be obtained.
